entre el microfono y la penumbra*: nuestro evento paralelo y la solidaridad con los detenidos

El dia de ayer 12/12 comenzo con una soleada jornada de evaluacion matinal sobre toda la semana de trabajo intenso que la delegacion global de recicladores realizo de sabado a sabado, e inmediatamente despues comenzamos la salida en grupo a la manifestacion convocada por todas las organizaciones no gubernamentales reunidas en copenhague y apoyada por cientos de manifestaciones paralelas alrededor del mundo.
Todo se llevaba a cabo de manera extremadamente pacificia y con bastante alegria a pesar del frio y el clima de las negociaciones. Un buen ambiente se respiraba en el aire, la gente estaba finalmente en la calle diciendole al mundo lo que piensa y exige para que podamos todos seguir viviendo en este mundo y en las mejores y mas democraticas condiciones.

Fue asi que habiendo quedado un poco rezagados al final de la marcha, en un momento dado la policia corto el camino dejando a cientos de manifestantes del otro lado de la barrera policial, donde se encontraban nuestros compañeros recicladores de india y Neil Tangri de Gaia.

Felizmente luego del apoyo de algunos que quedamos del otro lado, al grito de “let them go, let them go” (dejenlos salir, dejenlos salir!) varias de las personas fueron dejadas en libertad, entre ellos nuestros amigos recicladores, pero “unas centenas” dice la prensa fueron detenidas.
Durante mas de 2 horas y recien entrada la noche apenas a las 16pm con un frio indescriptible, los recicladores de latinoamerica y algunos apoyos nos quedamos en solidaridad con los “del otro lado de la barrera” mediante gritos y canciones insistentes .
Cuando se disolvio pacificamente el grupo de apoyo, del otro lado de otra de las tantas barreras que tienen estas negociaciones, esta vez nuevamente en el Bela Center, comenzaba nuestro evento paralelo oficial, titulado “La creacion de empleos verdes y el sector informal”, donde el cartonero Marcelo de Argentina paso en menos de 30 minutos de estar en la calle apoyando a los detenidos a hablar en uno de los estrados de la COP15 junto a sus compañeras de India y GAIA.

Si hay algo resaltable de esta delegacion global de recicladores y aliados participando de estas negociaciones durante toda la semana, es el grado de versatilidad y adaptacion que hay que tener para atacar todos los frentes: ser solidarios con los compañeros de los movimientos sociales y los mas afectados por el cambio climatico (indigenas, campesinos, y los mas pobres) tratar de incidir en las delegaciones oficiales, preparar todos nuestros eventos, aprender de otras experiencias, generar nuevos aliados y contactos, discutir y planificar colectivamente todas las acciones, etc, etc, etc!

Mis mas sinceras y humildes felicitaciones a todos los que estuvieron en Copenhague y a todos los que enviaron mensajes de solidaridad y apoyo de otras organizaciones hermanas en distintas ciudades.

por favor agreguen todo lo que puedan y quieran a estas dos ultimas subidas de mi parte, que lejos de querer acaparar el blog, son un intento de aprovechar 4 horas de espera en el aeropuerto y no dormirme en mi regreso a casa :-)

Between the microphone and gloom*: Our side event and our solidarity with detainees

Yesterday 12/12 started with a sunny morning and an agenda to assess the whole week, from Saturday to Saturday, of hard work by the global waste picker delegation, and immediately afterwards we started a mass gathering for a demonstration convened by all NGOs gathered in Copenhagen and supported by hundreds of parallel events around the world. Everything was done in an extremely peaceful manner and very joyfully, despite the weather and the climate of the negotiations. A good atmosphere was in the air, people were finally on the streets telling the world what they think and making demands so that we can all continue living in this world and in better and more democratic conditions.

It was so, having been left a little behind at the end of the march, at one point the police cut the road leaving hundreds of protesters at the other side of the police barricade, where our fellow Indian recyclers and Neil Tangri of Gaia were located.

Fortunately, due to the support from some who were at the other side, shouted “let them go, let them go” and several people were released, including our friends recyclers, but “some hundreds” were detained, as stated by the press. For over 2 hours and into the night, just at 16 pm, with an indescribable cold, the Latin American recyclers and some supporters stayed in solidarity with the ones at “the other side of the barrier” with insistent shouting and singing. When the support group disbanded peacefully at the other side, one of the many barriers that these negotiations have, again at Bella Center, our official side event entitled “The Creation of Green Jobs and the Informal Sector” was starting, where the waste picker Marcelo from Argentina went in less than 30 minutes from the streets supporting detainees, to speaking at one of the stages of COP 15 along with his peers from India and GAIA.

If there is anything to be highlighted from this global delegation of recyclers and allies participating in these negotiations during the week, is their degree of versatility and adaptation in order to advance in all fronts: to show solidarity with colleagues in the social movements and the most affected by climate change (indigenous people, peasants and the poorest), strive to influence the official delegations, prepare all of our events, learn from other experiences, generate new allies and contacts, discuss and plan collectively all actions, etc, etc etc!

My most sincere and humble congratulations to everyone who was in Copenhagen and to all who sent messages of solidarity and support from sister organizations in different cities.

Please add everything you can and want to these last two posts on my part, that far from wanting to monopolize the blog, are an attempt to use 4 hours, waiting at the airport and avoid falling asleep in my return to home :-)
