In response to this call for support and solidarity from the waste pickers of Bogota, all participants united in Brazil this past Friday November 30th, representing waste picker organizations from 18 countries voted unanimously to support and recognize the struggle of their Colombian counterparts.

São Paulo, dia 30 de novembro, 2012

We waste picker delegates from all countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Kenya, Benin, South Africa, India — united here at EXPOCATADORES, in the city of São Paulo, Brazil – send this letter to ARB (Recyclers’ Association of Bogota) to show our complete solidarity with all of the waste pickers of ARB, but also with Colombian society, which, like us, should be informed and declare its solidarity.

The waste pickers of the world are organizing and making new conquests. All of this is related to the strong and active participation of ARB in search of solutions to improve the waste pickers’ category. It’s not acceptable that an association as important as ARB, known around the world, would be attacked in such a cowardly, irresponsible, and prejudiced way.

We are in solidarity with the struggle of the Colombian waste pickers and condemn the persecution of the Bogota government that is going backwards while the rest of the world is advancing in relation to waste pickers. We demand that the government complies with the court order and recognizes the participation of waste pickers in solid waste management, through the collection, separation and recovery of recyclable materials.

What affects one, affects all.
