Our friends in one of the organizing groups told us they were not expecting any trouble. Saturday’s march for a fair, ambitious and binding (“FAB!”) climate change deal was billed as “family friendly” with about 60,000++ people expected on the streets of Copenhagen in a peaceful demonstration — the largest in Denmark’s history.

When it started we were all excited and walking in a group with our banner held high: RESPECT FOR WASTEPICKERS: PROTECT THE CLIMATE THROUGH RECYCLING! Around us were environmental groups from across Europe and around the world, some dressed in costumes (Pirates Against Climate Change!) and carrying their own banners. Personal favourites included “The Emperor’s New Climate Clothes…” with a painting of a naked Barack Obama (the US not making friends here in Copenhagen with their involvement in last week’s so-called “Danish text”) and the papier-mache head of Karl Marx with a sign that said: “It’s the economy, stupid!”

It was cold, especially since most of our group were from tropical countries, but we were dressed for it and along the route there were portable people’s kitchen’s serving vegan soup and tea. Music blaring from speakers, people laughing and chanting (VAMOS RECICLAR, NO INCINERAR!). We walked for just over an hour and had just crossed the bridge leaving Christianshaven when along the alleyways next to us we began to notice police gathering in riot gear in front of their vehicles. Within minutes there was chaos as a block of riot police cut off the march and then drove armoured vehicles into the space to pen in a block of protesters. We could hear police dogs barking.

Our group was relieved to find itself on the other side of the police pen…until we took a quick count and realized our Indian friends (Poornima, Sushila, Baby, Mohan and Malati, along with Neil of GAIA) were caught on the other side. They watched in the freezing cold for an hour as police arrested a few youths who were suspected of doing something…our group had seen no provocation before the police moved in. Eventually, after asking several times and making the case that the women from India were not dressed for the weather (whatever works!!) they were allowed to leave via a route at the back of the police cordon. As we were reunited with the group, the police began rounding up the group of drummers who had been playing music on the other side of the armoured vehicles and encouraging people to chant “Let Them Go!”…presumably the new Danish law has provisions for practising musical solidarity without a license. We later heard on the news that over 900 people had been arrested, with only 6 people formally charged.
