On Jan 29th, 2010, members of the Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP) were invited to speak at NOW’10 (New Options for the World) – a three-day seminar series at FLAME (Foundation for Liberal and Management Education), created with the objective of providing insights about critical issues facing the world today and exploring new options.
Emerging Challenges to Indian Polity and Media, Culture & Society were the three topics that speakers such as Mr. Arun Bhatia, Mr. Ayaz Memon among others spoke on.
Baby Mohite, Treasurer and a member of SWaCH, along with Mohan Nanavre – President of the KKPKP spoke on Beyond Copenhagen.
One could see a ‘Oh Wow’ forming on the audiences lips, as Ms. Mohite said that she had been to Copenhagen and represented Waste Collectors throughout India and the world.
She spoke of the valuable service that waste collectors do for the environment, the perils of landfills, what happened at Copenhagen. Ms. Mohite recounted how she asked the Indian Minister for Environment – Jairam Ramesh, why he and his ministry were allowing incineration plants like Hanjer to come up in India, thereby affecting waste collectors livelihoods and doing great damage to the environment. Causing the honorable minister to mumble and walk off in a huff, in front everyone present at the scene. In conclusion, Ms. Mohite said that she was happy to have presented the situation and the problems faced by her fellow waste collectors – the world around, in Copenhagen.
Mr. Nanavre spoke on how waste collectors situation has improved drastically due to organizing and uniting, and how development cannot be exclusive, while millions are deprived of basic amenities.
He emphasized the need for efforts by those in power, and for the youth to always keep in mind the man at the bottom of the ladder, and of course Mother nature.
After hearing high profile people such as Mr. Bhatia – a retired Indian Administrative Services officer and Mr. Memon – a journalist of repute, Ms. Mohite and Mr. Nanvare taking the podium was a fitting conclusion to the seminar, and won great applause from the audience!
