As part of the organizational efforts of the Kenyan Alliance of Waste Pickers, a waste pickers’ organization from Dandora, Kenya, has started a project raising pigs. Elaine Jones, Global Trade Programme Director at WIEGO, visited the group last January, together with a few students from MIT and Harvard. Their visit has helped to boost waste pickers’ determination to continue organizing in order to improve their working conditions and incomes.

The article on the pig project in Dondora is great. We need to add that the waste pickers at Dandora would like training in pig Rearing to improve their project Management capacity. Overall, it is a very encouraging effort on the part of waste pickers towards improving their livelihoods as well as reduce environmental pollution. It needs every support possible to realise its full potential.
