Chintan celebrated World Environment Day at Select Citywalk Mall, Saket on the 4th and 5th of June 2013 Day, to encourage awareness on cleaner environment. Le Passage to India Foundation was the institutional supporter for this celebration and Hindustan Tin Works Private Limited sponsored the special section.
The occasion provided a unique opportunity for people to learn about the trash that is generated, and how to dispose off some of the most toxic trash, e-waste, in a safe manner. An E-waste collection drive was launched in the mall and E-waste bins were strategically located at various places in the mall and the Chintan team educated curious mall visitors on safe practices for disposal of electronic waste like used mobile phones, laptops etc. Another exciting part of the event was the display of beautifully designed recycled products like clocks, chimes, lamps etc. Chintan and Hindustan Tin Works Pvt. Ltd., have worked with women wastepickers to convert metal scrap into highly usable, slick everyday products and these products at the mall were a huge attraction.
The event also encouraged a constant stream of visitors to sign green pledges to protect the environment by limiting use of plastic bags and switching over to more eco-friendly products. A painting competition conducted on “Garbage in the modern town” drew in 35 enthusiastic participants as did a slogan writing competition on the environment. A skit was put up by the children of wastepickers, giving them a unique opportunity of performing in front of a large mall audience and educating them on waste. A quiz event conducted by Chintan on waste generation and recycling waste helped people comprehend the magnitude of the waste generated.
The event was effective in spreading awareness about protection of the environment and ensured people participation towards a more sustainable and greener planet.
