Brittany Ayana Thomas is an American student who came to Belo Horizonte in August 2015 to work with Dr. Sonia Maria Dias in the “Gender and Waste” Project, an empowerment initiative for women waste pickers in Minas Gerais. Brittany had an interest in recording interviews of the initiative’s participants to share their perspectives, challenges, and successes. To promote the project in a creative way, Brittany created painted portraits of the women who participated in the project and a documentary with Cai Thomas, an American filmmaker. Come celebrate the end of her fellowship and see her work with us at ESPAI.
