The Global Alliance of Waste Pickers participates in the webinar “Possibilities for a just transition of the informal waste sector” organized by UN-Habitat and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research from April 4 to 6th, 2022.

The resumed Fifth Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) concluded besides others with the passing of a resolution titled End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument. This resolution recognizes “the significant contribution made by workers under informal and cooperative settings to collecting, sorting and recycling plastics in many countries”.

In order to identify and discuss possibilities for a just transition of the informal waste sector under a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) would like to invite you to an Expert Group Meeting, taking place virtually from 4 to 6 April 2022. There will be two repetitive sessions each day, to accommodate different time zones.
