From the International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP) we want to express our strongest repudiation and publicly denounce the brutal police repression exercised against our members during the mobilization held on June 6, 2024 in front of the former Ministry of Production. The sole purpose of this peaceful march was to request an urgent response regarding the situation of the importation of recyclable material, which directly affects our sector.
Instead of dialogue and constructive response, our comrades were met with violence and repression, demonstrating once again the lack of sensitivity and commitment of the current national government to the workers who struggle every day for their livelihood in already adverse conditions.
The recession in consumption and the policies of opening paper imports are causing a drastic fall in the prices of recyclable materials, severely hitting the pockets of our comrades. This situation is unsustainable and requires urgent measures to avoid the collapse of a sector that is already too much punished by regressive policies implemented in the last six months.
From IAWP, we express our solidarity with all the comrades who were victims of the repression and reiterate our state of alert. We demand an immediate and positive response from the government to bring much needed relief to our sector. We will not cease in our struggle for the rights and welfare of the waste pickers of Argentina.
Violence and repression cannot be the answer to the legitimate demand of workers who only seek justice and dignified conditions for their work. We demand respect, dialogue and concrete solutions.
We are together in this struggle, and we will not take a step back until we are heard and the necessary measures are taken to protect our work and our rights.
Enough repression! For an urgent and just response for the waste pickers of Argentina!
