The International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP) seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Finance Officer to join our team. This individual will ensure effective financial management, transparency, and accountability, supporting our work for waste pickers worldwide.

Position: Finance Officer
Location: Remote, preferably in Global South Countries
Contract Type: Full-time: 20 days a month, with a probation period of 3 months. The contract will be up to 30th April 2026
Start Date: 10th November 2024 or Earlier

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management: Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Budgeting: Work closely with the Finance Committee, Treasurer, other program and regional coordinators, General Secretary, and Project Officer to prepare and manage project budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all internal policies and external regulations, including tax, audit, and donor requirements.
  • Streamlining payments: Reviewing invoices, reimbursements for staff, external consultants and waste picker leaders* including Executive Council members (wherever required*)
  • Grant Management: Manage financial reporting for grants received for projects, ensuring timely and accurate submission of financial reports to donors.
  • Accounting: Oversee bookkeeping, including recording transactions, processing invoices, and reconciling accounts.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the Finance Committee and stakeholders.
  • Audits: Coordinate and facilitate internal and external audits, ensuring adherence to audit standards.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and implement best practices for efficient financial operations, including managing reimbursements and training the office bearers, staff, external consultant and Executive Council on filing reimbursements and invoices (wherever relevant).
  • Coordination with WIEGO for payments: Create monthly files with all the required payment documentation reviewed and captured, then request payments from WIEGO.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in the non-profit or international development sector.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial management, and donor compliance.
  • Experience with grant management and donor reporting.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools (e.g., Spreadsheet, Excel).
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Integrity, transparency, and commitment to ethical financial management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and remotely in a multicultural environment.
  • Familiarity with issues related to social inclusion, labour rights, and organising in the informal economy is an asset.
