The International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP) seeks a dynamic, motivated, dedicated individual to fill the Communications Manager position. The successful candidate will play a key role in preparing a robust communication strategy for the IAWP and its affiliates to advance the work of waste pickers across the globe and support IAWP Affiliates.

Position: Communications Manager

Location: Global South (Flexible, with travel across the planet as necessary)

Contract Type: Full-time @20 days a month, 7.5 hours a day, with a probation period of 3 months. The contract will be up to 30th April 2026

Start Date: 15th February 2025 (preferred) or 1st March 2025

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communications Management: Prepare and implement IAWP’s communication plan under the guidance of the Communications Committee. This includes developing social media and mainstream media strategies, an interpretation plan, and crowdfunding for relief work. Coordinate with WIEGO and other networks and allies for communication. Prepare communication plans for each event and campaign undertaken by IAWP.
  • Training: Train worker leaders and office bearers in communication, directly or by bringing in external resources. Identify and prepare strategies for delivering content-specific training through various communication mediums.
  • Managing website transfers, regular updates, and maintenance services, including supervising the Digital Infrastructure Officer responsible for website management.
  • Newsletter production. Provide copy-editing and editing of publications, newsletters, articles and blog entries. Research and post news on waste pickers regularly.
  • Supervision: Supervise the Communication Officer, Digital Infrastructure Officer and Interpretation Coordinator in finalizing and producing content calendar (s) to streamline processes for external communication and manage interpretation and translation requests.
  • Networking: Network with journalists and media to cover IAWP events and campaigns, including maintaining a contact list of journalists.
  • Point of Contact: Serve as the point person for communications for staff, office bearers, the Executive Council, affiliates, partners, and allies.
  • Editor-in-Chief: Manage the publication process, including quality checks, tracking comments on design and text, and management of services-related content for all IAWP publications, including the newsletter. Finalize written and visual content for publication with the help of the communications officer and other external content developers.
  • Procurement Officer for Communication Needs: Interpretation services, interpretation platforms, devices, social media platform-based purchases, web-domain-related purchases in consultation with the digital infrastructure officer, and content production services.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s or Undergraduate degree in Communication, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, or any other relevant field, along with skills for designing publications and proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other applicable software and experience in website management, including WordPress. Previous experience with content management systems is an asset.
  • Additionally, the candidate should have excellent English communication skills. Multilingual proficiency in at least one of the languages IAWP affiliates use is an asset.
  • 5-7 years of Experience in communication roles, preferably within social justice, environmental, or grassroots and worker and trade union movements
  • Willingness to travel extensively.
  • Candidates from the Global South shall be preferred.
