Likoni, Kenya – April 2025

On April 3, 2025, a delegation of waste picker leaders from Kenya, Europe, and the International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP) visited the Likoni Dumpsite in Mombasa, Kenya, to show support for the local waste picker community facing violent eviction threats.
The visit was led by Rachel Muturi, African Regional Coordinator for the IAWP, alongside Pietro, President of the European Waste Pickers from Rete ONU Association, and national representatives from Nairobi and Kiambu. Organized with the assistance of the Likoni Dumpsite Chairperson, Mwangi, the meeting gathered a large number of waste pickers ready to share their experiences, fears, and resilience.
Rachel Muturi opened the event by emphasizing the importance of unity and global solidarity. She encouraged the community to remain organized and affirmed:
“Waste pickers across the world face similar struggles, especially the lack of recognition and respect for the crucial work they do.”
The testimonies from Likoni waste pickers highlighted a grave situation. Mwangi detailed the long-standing history of the dumpsite, stating that waste picking has supported generations of families. He expressed concern over the recent acts of violence, recounting:
“Police burned down our animals, businesses, and collected materials.”
One of the most harrowing testimonies came from Everline Anyango, who shared a personal account of police brutality:
“This is what we do to feed and school our children. I do not even have money for the hospital.”

The delegation, including leaders like Brian Gisore and Solomon Njoroge, stressed the need for formal organization to strengthen the community’s ability to claim their rights. The Nairobi and Kiambu waste picker representatives also affirmed their solidarity, recognizing that similar struggles exist across Kenya.
The Likoni visit underscored the urgent need for protection, legal recognition, and respect for waste pickers’ work. Despite the violence and displacement, the community continues to stand strong, demanding what should never be in question: dignity, recognition, and the right to work in peace.
