Clinton Global Initiative – Informal Recycling Sector Meeting

New York, NY, USA, September 19-21, 2011

Abstract

As part of one of the Clinton Global Initiative commitments, the informal sector presented at an event held at the Harvard Club in New York City. The aim was for waste pickers to get their voices heard amongst important players which are not necessarily aware of their demands. Colombian waste picker and leader Nohra Padilla presented, “Organizacion de los Recicladores, Una Alternativa Social, Tecnica, Economica y Ambiental Reconocido en un Sistema Organizado, Para el Manejo Integral de los Residuos Solidos”. Allies from GAIA and WIEGO presented in the plenary session. Lucia Fernandez, with the Global Alliance of Waste Pickers, presented “Moving Towards Waste Pickers’ Inclusion and Decentralization of Solid Waste Management, A Re-thinking Approach for Closing Landfills.”
